Old Testament

Zephaniah

Zephaniah announces that 'the great day of the LORD is near' — a sweeping judgment on Judah and the nations for their sin and spiritual complacency — and calls the humble to seek the LORD before it comes. But like the other prophets, the book moves from judgment to hope, and its closing note is uniquely tender. Beyond the terror of that day, God reveals himself among his people as 'a mighty one who will save,' and then astonishingly declares that he 'will rejoice over you with joy... he will rejoice over you with singing.' It is one of Scripture's clearest glimpses of the heart of God — not merely willing to forgive, but positively delighting in those he redeems, singing over them with gladness.
