Old Testament
The Song of Solomon is a collection of love poems celebrating the beauty and goodness of covenant love between a bride and her beloved. Against both prudery and licentiousness, it affirms human love and desire within marriage as a gift of God, ringing with the refrain of belonging: 'my beloved is mine, and I am his.' Its climax exalts the very nature of love — 'love is strong as death,' unquenchable by many waters, beyond all price, a flame of the LORD himself. From ancient times God's people have also heard in the Song the love between God and Israel, and between Christ and his church — the LORD as the divine Bridegroom whose banner over his people is love. The Song teaches that human love is a good gift that mirrors, and points to, the fierce and faithful love of God.
