Old Testament

Haggai

Haggai confronts the returned exiles over misplaced priorities: they have busied themselves paneling their own houses while the house of God lies in ruins, and they wonder why life feels empty and unfruitful. God's word through Haggai is pointed — 'consider your ways' — and a summons to put him first by rebuilding the temple. When the people obey and resume the work, God meets their discouragement with promise: 'the latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' and 'in this place I will give peace.' The modest second temple's glory would be surpassed when Christ himself entered it. Haggai calls God's people to give his work first place and assures them that what they build in obedience, God will fill with glory and peace.
